What do you think of when someone says camo? Combat boots, face paint, festivals, mud… Action Man?! Think again! Camo came storming back in to the limelight early this year and it’s not going down without a fight. With it’s earthy hues and structured silhouettes it’s no wonder designers are constantly tweaking this faux military trend. Seen on all of the fash-pack and the elite of street style its refusal to disappear season after season shows that the camo print has taken a step away from its original urban street vibe and gone global.
With the likes of London’s favourite designer Christopher Kane opening his fall show with a heavily military theme. His clashing prints of muted blue and grey camouflage instantly switched on our fashion sensors. From parkas to party dresses, Kane like other designers this season proved that camo could do no wrong. This popular military trend is soon to get wardrobe staple status with its easy to wear attitude. Especially with both Michael Kors and Alexander Wang giving it their nod of approval.
Since seeing this riot of a print all over the catwalk we’ve had a serious craving for camo! You won’t be able to get enough of this versatile faux military print so if you’re more edgy-grunge compared to girly cute this trend can be worked either way. Pair floaty dresses with oversized camo shirts and jackets or team a printed number with some sky-high platforms depending on your style of choice.
To work this season’s micro trend go bold! Nothing says fashion forward more than clashing patterns. Team camo with feminine florals or mismatch with bright show-stopping hues for a fun laid back festival vibe. In the nature of the print be adventurous and playful, why stick to the rules when you can create a look for every mood. That’s an order soldier! The great thing about this trend; it can be worked into any piece and dressed up or down. One of our camo prints will no longer have you blending into the background that’s for sure!
So whether you’re looking for an eye-catching piece or you need a slightly cool separate to revive an everyday outfit camo is the go to print. From grunge to girly chic get inspired by this forward marching print and choose a disguise that is sure to get you noticed. Go crazy for camo!
Here at Motel we are always looking out for the freshest new talent out there and we know that soulful Jetta is going to be huge in 2013! If you haven’t already had the chance to hear her music, which has been compared to the likes of Florence Welch and The XX, then we suggest you give it a listen so you can get the lyrics down way before everyone else starts singing along.
It’s not just us who think Jetta is hot property; the singer recently had her own feature online as she was interviewed for iD magazine. Forward thinking iD magazine always gets the scoop on the finest new emerging talent so when they say Jetta is ‘causing a ruckus’, it’s a big deal. Not only is Jetta one to watch for her music but her slick sense of style gets our seal of approval too! She looked uber cool in our Bonnie Long Sleeve Crop Top and Lyndie Turtleneck Crop Top as she shows how to make best use of its layering ability. Team it with our Lomas Sleeveless Playsuit to match her look from the shoot, or go your own way with a Maxi Skirt or High Waisted Skinnies and plenty of jewellery. Now we can’t promise that you’ll wake up tomorrow with a voice strong enough to provide vocals for Paloma Faith and Cee Lo like Jetta but you can get your hands on her edgy look now at Motel Rocks!
Patti McGee is one seriously cool lady and if you’re yet to encounter her, you’re in for a treat. Patti may have been in her prime in your Mother’s youth but as the Women’s First National Skateboard Champion, she was causing some serious stir in the ’60s. Like most skateboarders of that time, Patti says she “started out as a surfer, so when there was no surf my friends and I would find a hill to ride. That’s how I started skating.”
Her influence on the world as a skateboarder was profound but her influence as a woman is not something to be ignored. Patti McGee was the first female to ever be inducted into the Skateboarding Hall Of Fame and paved the way for many girls after her to take up skateboarding as a hobby or sport that was, at the time, predominantly male. Not only did she achieve all of this, she achieved it with a tremendous amount of style! Something she considers as a highlight of her carrier is not the national tour or the TV shows but the cover of Life Magazine. Lets take a moment to ignore the fact that she is balanced upside down on a skateboard for this cover shot… she is doing that with her blonde hair in a beehive style, in a bright red jumper and white cigarette pants. What did we tell you? One damn cool lady! It’s not just Motel who are loving Patti’s vintage style either, Scottish designer Holly Fluton recently citied her as an unofficial muse for her SS13 collection.
Now we’re not saying that to impress us requires handstands, tricks and flips; a nod to Patti’s casual ’60s style will do! Motel has lots of vintage inspired pieces to help you out like our range of Catalina Off Shoulder Skater Dresses in a range of cute colours like Black, White, Red and Plum. Or how about channelling your inner Twiggy with one of Motel’s classic quirky prints like Square Eyes? We love the Maria Cut Out Shoulder Dress with it’s flattering bodycon fit and cut out shoulders for just a flash of skin! Or of course our ever dependable iconic Jordan Jeans also carry the print whilst allowing for the perfect skinny fit.
Today, at 61, Patti still likes to take her board out to the local park and ride… feeling inspired yet? We certainly are.
It’s the fashion event of the year and it is finally here! New York Fashion Week has officially begun and Motel’s USA Team have been at the heart of it all, spotting all of the inspirational looks that are sweeping the runways and streets of New York. The streets are awash with fashion as the trendy, the preppy and the darn right bizarre fashionistas step out in their finest. Team USA is bringing you the hottest looks right from the centre of the crazy whirlwind that is New York, so you can sit back and enjoy whilst scouting the best trends! Prepare to feel inspired…
These two lovely ladies give you an idea on what kind of prints were being adored in the Big Apple this week. Camo looks set to make a big come back for SS13 as Motel saw it being worn in the form largely of coats or dresses. Even those who weren’t wearing all out camo were marking it’s popularity with military style boots and accessories. This trend has never been easier to wear as MotelRocks.com has just launched a new collection of Pixelated Camo featuring the Zola PU Trim Bodycon Dress which is full on ’90s revial with a high neck, racer style sleeveless cut and mini length, amongst dozens of others. We love the bright, funky prints that were being worn too with eye catching, clashing colours on display. Plus with our Digital Love Print with bright blue, neon green and pink mirrored design, it has never been easier to work this tricky trend and stand out from the crowd!
Colour was being splashed all over catwalks and it was hard to scan a f’row without seeing someone engaging with this trend. Motel is loving bold colours right now as we have dozens of pieces for you to be able to work it! Check out our take on the Colour Splash trend now.
One thing New York certainly isn’t afraid of is a classic leather jacket and as the cold looks set to stay around so does this trend! Leather Jackets were being rocked along side practically every look as they are so versatile.
Coming as no surprise to the fashion world the Monochrome trend is the one that is taking hold of New York by storm. Marc Jacobs knew it was going to be huge for SS13 and so did the models, editors and New York ladies it seems. We spotted black & white around every corner and at every must-see show so it looks like our trend forecasters were spot on and the monochrome madness has taken over! To make sure you don’t miss out on the biggest and most flattering trend; we have Monochrome beauties like our Cult Jordan Jean waiting for you at MotelRocks.com… that’s if Miley Cyrus and Jessie J haven’t snapped up the last pairs of course!
As the world is gearing up for the biggest fashion month of the year, the Motel Design Team kicked off the fun at Copenhagen Fashion Week! We saw all sorts of styles strutting down the runway and had a lot of inspiration to take in from the best Copenhagen had to offer. Our favourites included Freya Dalsjö, who was granted the honour of opening this year’s CFW, as we loved the sharp and structured silhouettes that were featured in her show, and the heavy reliance on leather and contrasting luxe fur; ultra-glam! Another designer who was onto one of SS13’s hottest trends, leather, was Barbara I. Gongini whose collection gave off a tough, rock chick vibe as black leather again proved key across biker jackets, fitted pants and oil slick-style dresses.
Our third favourite show from Copenhagen Fashion Week has to be that of Anne Sofie Madsen whose designs were quirky and futuristic with sci-fi like detailing featured on bodycon dresses and crop tops. Our latest Digital Love Print would gain a seal of approval from this edgy designer. Her collection was largely showcased in black and white prints, again cementing what we knew about the Monochrome madness that is set to take over this SS13.
We didn’t of course spend all of our time drooling over the catwalk cool styles; we also found a minute to stroll through the streets and stores whilst taking in the vibe of Copenhagen and of course… stop for a traditional fika (cake!).

If you haven’t yet heard of Jessi Jae Joplin you soon will! This California girl is best known for her work in music as lead singer of the band The Ruckus and in fashion as she has her own online vintage store The Fabulous Stains! On top of this, Jessi boasts credentials as a fashion stylist and journalist blogging for Buzznet, working alongside the fashion designers of Heatherette, in the Fashion Editorial Department of JANE Magazine, AND for the style editors of E! Online! Her inspirations include David Bowie, Gwen Stefani, Blondie and Lisa Frank which comes as no surprise as this cool chick is known for her wild and crazy personality and amazing stage presence whilst performing across Southern California with band, The Ruckus. Jessi Jae Joplin already loves Motel as we spotted her rocking our Maria Cut Out Shoulder Dress in the eye catching, sixties-inspired Square Eyes Print.
Jessi also visited our showroom recently and chose the Phoebe Dress, the Tera Dress and particularly the Agnes Dress as her most wanted pieces. In keeping with her style, Miss Joplin chose to add spiky jewellery and a leather Jacket to edge up the dresses. Never one to miss a fashion trick, Jessie’s fave piece the Agnes Dress is bang on trend with its monochrome stripes and in her own words ‘flatters every figure’ with its skater style skirt. Don’t worry, you don’t have to wait long to get your hands on one as it launches next week at MotelRocks.com! If that weren’t enough to convince you that Jessi is a big one to watch in 2013, how about the fact that her loves include glitter, candy and pizza! Our kind of gal!

Here at Motel we’ve become a little obsessed with our new favourite blog find Lookbook Cookbook! From the moment we heard the concept of this blog was a sweet mixture of fashion and food, we already had our aprons on and were greasing up our baking trays.
With this home cooking blog, all the recipes featured are strictly vegan, but despite the usual connotations, we can assure you they are anything but boring. We were surprised about the amount of delicious yet healthy treats author of the blog, Jessica Milan has come up with. From natural smoothies, pies and sweet pops to cookies and confectionary, you’d never believe they are all Gluten, Dairy and Soy free and mouth-wateringly good!
However this is not just your average cooking blog, as by profession Jessica is a fashion photographer and puts her skills to good use featuring fash-piration shots of her beautiful model friends eating her recipes in style! Queue us attending to our peanut butter cups in our Jeffery Campbells too…
It’s time to dig out the copies (or borrow mum’s) of John Hughes’ classic films like The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles as The Carrie Diaries is bringing back the 80’s teen fashion! Girls before us may have lusted over the wardrobe of Molly Ringwald but now we have a new fashion icon in the form of the young Carrie Bradshaw, played by Anna Sophia Robb. We have all probably drooled over Carrie Bradshaw’s mix of designer and vintage clothes, plus her array of Manolo Blahniks, whilst watching re-runs of Sex and The City, but with The Carrie Diaries stepping on to the scene it means that Carrie’s fashion is more accessible than ever.
In an interview with the costume designer Eric Daman (who has previously worked on Gossip Girl, what a CV he must have) he says that for Carrie’s look he has been ‘working with classic 80′s colours and prints, but in more slimming shapes and silhouettes—not giant shoulder pads and oversized bulk’. So you can relax as shoulder pads don’t look set to make a comeback and Motel has slimming shapes and silhouettes covered with our multitude of dresses for SS13! Leather-look skirts like the Flute Skirt are a nod to her flippy, flirty style.
In the pilot episode of the new series we get to see Carrie flit around New York City on an internship in a flurry of sequins, mesh and bright colours. The series gives us the chance to see the younger side to her in which she is finding her fashion feet and dealing with changing friendships and relationships. Lucky for you we adore her youthful style and so have sequins, mesh and monochrome all at your fingertips at MotelRocks.com. The Fairy Dress can be dressed down with a bright jacket, but still show your fashion fun too.
If you’re a fan of the original series then we are sure you’ll love a chance to see new Carrie adventures. Even though they may be minus Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda, young Carrie has another group of friends that bring plenty of drama. If you never caught the Sex and The City addiction however then we can promise you the best of 80’s fashion and music, plus lots of screen time for Austin Butler from the new series! Sequins are the signature must-have for the 80′s and the Gabby Dress brings them straight into this century.
Anna Sophia is much more current with her love of SS13′s biggest trend, monochrome! Get her look with the Hannah Shift Dress and add a signature bowler hat.
You won’t have failed to notice that monochrome is the next big thing, with designers such as Marc Jacobs splashing black and white across the runways. In the form of the cult skinny Jordan Jean, we have created the most wearable item that will ensure you are up to date and right in the middle of it all as Monochrome Madness takes over. The biggest stripe fan is model and all-round cutie Cara Delevingne, who can’t wear her black & white jeans without a leather jacket and biker boots to show them off. The angelic girl with the crazy faces, Cara suits the jeans to a T with her playful ’90s style.
Bloggers like Olivia Lopez, Aurora Loveless and The Style Playlist have all been spotted wearing the Jordan Jean recently, making sure that they are keeping up in the style stakes with celebrities such as Jessie J and Miley Cyrus, who have sported the stripes too. An amazing statement piece – these skinny jeans are in a stretch black and white striped material with an ever-flattering high waist to boot.
Some of our favourite bloggers have been proving this week that sequins are for life and not just for Christmas! The sequin trend looks set to continue throughout 2013 and bloggers such as Anouska Proetta Brandon and Duoch Jag showed off their Gabby Sequin Dresses in iridescent green, whilst others like Chloe Ting chose to show off their sequins in Spandangle Shorts, perfect if you want to add just a touch of sparkle to your outfit. These iridescent beauties come in both Green and Purple so they add new textures to your wardrobe with a hint of bling. Team with a pair of tights and heels and a flick of black eyeliner for the perfect party look – you can’t get more glamourous than this!
