Midland’s Young Designer Awards

November 9th, 2010 — 5:27pm

Now in its third year, The Midlands Young Fashion Designer Awards (MYFDA) is an annual event featuring fashion students and graduate designers, we naturally we wanted to cover up and coming talent. We had our guest blogger on the case to cover the exciting fashion show. ..

Tucked away in the heart of Birmingham lies the Conservatoire which plays host to one of the most favoured upcoming young fashion designer events; The Midlands Young Fashion Designer Awards 2010.

The event plays an important part in giving new and independent designers the chance to showcase their designs for a panel of fashion judges and experts.  Designers lay anxious behind the scenes hoping to impress and scoop a prize for their collections.  Designs which fall into one of the following categories;  Ready To Wear, Evening Wear, Haute Couture and Overall Winner.   All designs are required to produce three outfits that provide innovative thinking, creativeness and functionality.

On entering the staging area twinkling soft lights set the mood with the audience buzzing with anticipation for the exciting collection they would see.  Kicking the show off was Body Popping local impressing everyone with his moves and even managing to move to the Nintendo Wii menu music.  Impressed as people were, all were very ready to see the beginning of the Ready To Wear that started off the evening.

Gracing the stage were 23 designers exciting collections providing, a range of looks from lustrous and sophistication to bright and completely flamboyant.   All categories hosted many designs that had clearly had time and hard work put into them. However there could only be one winner for each category.

  • Ready to Wear Winner: Rav Matharu, Birmingham

- a designer using the inspiration of a functional geek tailored look with basic blues, and neutral tones.

  • Evening Wear Winner: Mellisa Boyer, Birmingham

– Mellisa creates pretty feminine, natural and exaggerated elegant pieces.  Elaborating on utter sheek and beauty.

  • Haute Couture Winner: Victoria Bramwell, Milton Keynes

– a flashy collection, of nothing but colour vibrant clash and Alice in Wonderland hints

  • Overall MYFDA 2010 Winner: Victoria Bramwell, Milton Keynes

The show is known for its superb range of collections and this year’s MYFD awards was no exception.  Raising money for charity Acorns Children’s Hospice this show was a great hit for not only superb designs but the great atmosphere that went in hand.

As at most fashion related events, ladies pull out their best outfits to walk the event as their own mini catwalk.. above you can check out some of my favourite ladies from the event!

FASHION WEEK STYLE SPOTTING

September 22nd, 2010 — 5:21pm

After attending the Vauxhall Fashion Scout shows we quickly shot off to Somerset House to do a bit of style spotting as we knew this is the mecca for true fashion lovers during fashion week. We saw a few celebrities making their way to the shows as well, DJ Queen Jodie Harsh with her flamboyant hair do, jazz /pop extraordinaire Paloma Faith with her wonderful eccentric style and Pixie Lott working knee high socks which are a firm favourite of ours.

The general mood for Autumn/Winter 2010 we found was caramel chiffon shirts mixed up with tough leather. Its all about mixing up fabrics this season. Black was worked in loose fitting smock dresses with lashings of jewellery and it was all about boot camp too ladies! There were also plenty of eye popping patterns being paraded at Somerset House, it made us quite excited about our winter collection.

Fashion’s Big Night Out – New York – Guest Blogger!

September 14th, 2010 — 3:19pm

Hey MotelRocks.com readers it’s Erin aka Spikes here to report to you about New York’s Fashion’s Night Out!

Michael Kor’s window display.

You may ask, “What is Fashion’s Night Out?” FNO was created not only to celebrate fashion but to also get shoppers and fashionistas around the world excited about shopping again after we reached a recession. FNO is the only night you may attend a department store party hosted by your favourite designer, receive a makeover at your favourite places to shop, watch a concert or even meet your style icon!

The streets of Manhattan were filled with fashionable people and great inspiration.

I stopped quite a few ladies with a unique sense of style that really showed off what New York City fashion is all about. I had to snap their photos! I adored each of their outfits but there was something missing…MOTEL! I told them all about MotelRocks.com and all the fabulous pieces they need to have in their closets. They were very excited about Motel and I’m sure the next time these ladies step out they’ll be wearing Motel!

There were many events happening all over the city! It was impossible to attend them all but I did choose a few places I’m sure you’ll love!

First stop, “Billionaire Boys Club” store. BBC is a menswear brand created by one of my style icons Pharrell Williams of the music group N.E.R.D and Japanese fashion icon Nigo, the founder of A Bathing Ape (BAPE). Even though BBC isn’t a women’s wear brand I feel you can learn a great deal from men’s fashion. BBC is a fun brand that’s worn by those that do not take fashion serious. BBC is very versatile, you can dress it up or down very much like Motel! I had the opportunity to meet and take a photograph with Pharrell himself!

Second stop, Patricia Field’s Fashion’s Night Out party! Patricia Field is well known for her styling on the famous tv show and movie “Sex In the City”! She has her own store in the heart of Manhattan.

She kept the original sign of the store! I love anything vintage!

Patricia Field’s store is filled with glitter, glam and tons of goodies! Shopping in her store is like a treasure hunt. You never know what you may find…

Browsing through racks I found these darling bodysuits! Do they look familiar!?! hehe.

The ladies of Patricia Field…

Last stop, Irregular Choice! Irregular Choice shoes are the coolest shoes I’ve ever seen!

I’m sure if you pair these gold booties with knee socks and a Motel dress I’m sure you’ll stand out in the crowd.

After a lot of walking and shopping, Fashion’s Night Out festivities were over and the streets became empty because everyone started to head home. What a magical evening filled with fashion! Until next time…

Goodwood Vintage Festival

August 16th, 2010 — 1:00pm

Yesterday I was whisked off to cover the Goodwood Vintage Festival courtesy of Motel to do a bit of style spotting. Held in the beautiful Sussex countryside I followed the crowds of impeccable dressed people in my rather foolishly chosen choice of shoes that were my vintage clogs. My weapon of choice for the day was my favourite red lippie.

This unique festival is a celebration of all things vintage so whether you love the pin up glamour of the 50′s or the retro patterns of the swinging 60’s, everyone came together to give this festival a bit of glitz and glamour. There was an amazing pop-up high street and rows of tents selling everything from prim twin-sets to vintage lingerie. I managed to get in a few bands and hit up a Roller Disco but unfortunately I wasn’t able to show off my moves due to a fashion error of wearing a maxi shirt! Although the festival embraces music, film, art and design, the primary focus is fashion and I could safety say there was more hair spray in that field than in any run of Hairspray.

Remember to check if you have been uploaded to our Festival Chic section on MotelRocks for your chance to win £250 worth of Motel Clothes!!!

Here’s the band on the top of the bus! They all looked like they had stepped out off the set of Quadrophenia.

I look forward to the next Goodwood festival!

Motel Vintage Photo Shoot

August 12th, 2010 — 9:13am

With the arrival of our gorgeous new Vintage range we couldn’t resist having a bit of fun with lush garments whilst the sun was out for a change.  We thought who better than to give them a test run than some lovely style bloggers from Bristol. We met for some lunch by the harbour side then got shooting in our mini photo studio in the office. We had Charlie May who is a fashion pioneer with her style blog Girl A La Mode which has been featured in Marie Claire for a blog award. There was Lexi who is her partner in crime and Lara who runs Tights blog that she started whilst studying fashion at University. It was manic but this is what happens when there are five girls in a small space trying on lots of clothes listening to Toto’s Africa.

This is our Nautical themed photo shoot outside. We had the perfect back drop with Bristol harbour side, tall ships and of course plenty of wind to get the nostalgia.

We just loved Charlie May’s clog’s that she worked with our Azalia stripped shorts. Once finished we were just dying to get on the tall ship behind us we thought it looked great to have a party on!

The clothes featured on the photo shoot can be found on our website as part of our new Motel Vintage range.
