Snapshot City Guide – Liverpool!

Here is another city guide from our Student Ambassador Rebecca studying at The University of Liverpool! She has created a snapshop guide to the stylish city…

“Before I got to Liverpool, all I knew about it was that it had been dubbed the European Capital of Culture in 2008, and I wasn’t entirely sure why. After all, isn’t it just a northern city? Yet when I walked into the Cavern Club and saw the graffitied walls while a live band played Eleanor Rigby in the background I finally started to get it. Liverpool is nowhere near as big as many other British cities, but it acts as a little trove of quirky places that I just couldn’t imagine elsewhere.

Campus sits atop Mount Pleasant (ironically named, it’s not pleasant mid-heat wave), and a quick walk down the hill brings you right into the city centre.  Conveniently located halfway down is Cuthbert’s Bakehouse, whose window displays never fail to disappoint. I’m a sucker for anything antiquated and I do love a good bit of bunting, so combine that with the most delicious cupcakes (fancy London cafés, eat your heart out!) and you’re onto a winner.

A red velvet to take away, and left onto Renshaw Street to visit Raider’s Vintage. I honestly don’t understand why so few people know about this place. The rails are always crammed with the best jumpers and sequined dresses. Temptation greets me like a naughty friend every time I pass the coat section (I do not need any more!), but it’s the bags that get me every time. Is it possible to have too many?

Regardless of whether you’ve managed to resist their wares or not, it’s probably about time you had a quick bite to eat. Close by on Bold Street is Leaf, and I’m pretty sure it’s the only teashop I’ve ever found that stays open till 2am. They have the widest selection of teas I have ever seen, but if you fancy something in the evening I recommend their open mic night on Tuesdays (rules state no covers of “Wonderwall”).

I haven’t even mentioned the Shipping Forecast (get a TOT card), the Hard Days Night Hotel’s champagne cocktails, or how beautiful St John’s Garden looks at dusk. I’ve been here for over a year and I still keep finding new places. Liverpool’s more than a couple of football teams and dodgy Beatles tribute acts, I promise.”
